The AP is reporting that the Chicago White Sox have traded starting pitcher Jon Garland to the Angels for gold glove short stop Orlando Cabrera.
The 28-year-old Garland, an 18-game winner in 2005 and 2006, was 10-13 with a 4.23 ERA in 32 starts last season. [While] Cabrera, 33, batted .301 with 35 doubles, eight home runs, 86 RBIs and a career-high 101 runs with the Angels last year.
Is it just me or do the Angels seem to like hoarding pitching? I mean seriously, they’ve already got one of the top rotations in the league not to mention practically all the young pitching prospects. I’m guessing Garland or one of the other desirable young pitchers (most likely Ervine Santana) will now be traded away to acquire some power to protect Vlad. If not, this trade doesn’t make sense to me from the Halos’ perspective. The Sox on the other hand will likely shift Uribe over to second creating a solid infield combination. I don’t think fielding is the biggest need for the Pale Hose but Cabrera should help with the offense (which is the most pressing need) a bit as well.

1this is a good deal for both sides…Garland will definitely help the Angels and stabilize the rotation. Cabrera is a steady, professional hitter who will add some flavor to an otherwise stale White Sox lineup.
The wierd thing is that the Angels major concern going into this offseason was their offense…and now the offense is weaker with the departure of Cabrera. I’m thinking that the addition of Garland will allow them to move a young pitching prospect like Ervin Santana for some offensive help.
