Update 2: Ken Rosenthall has said this one is dead barring a miracle. So that's the end of that right? Bay is staying a Pirate right? Maybe not. I'll have a post up shortly.

Update: MLB.com is NOW reporting that the deal isn't finalized just yet. I realize all the MLB reporters want to be the ones with the scoop but seriously, let's try and get at least some things correct shall we boys?

The Tampa Bay Rays have apparently acquired Jason Bay from the Pittsburgh Pirates in the aftermath of the Manny Ramirez mega deal collapsing.

The Pirates reportedly are receiving shortstop Reid Brignac and right-hander Jeff Niemann both highly rated prospects. Neither are the Rays top prospects but both should help the Pirates in the very near future so this looks like it could be one of the rare deals that helps both teams.

This trade is also a significant shift in momentum from the Red Sox to the Rays. Some conspiracy theorists had been postulating that the Manny trade was nothing than the Sox' attempt to keep the Pirates too busy to trade Bay to the Rays. Whether that's accurate or not, the first place Rays now have the power bat they needed in left field while the BoSox are left with a player that yesterday said they "didn't deserve a player like him".
