The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel today reported that the Brewers have signed free agent Eric Gagne to a one year deal worth $10 million. Gagne of course is the long time closer turned setup man who has struggled in recent years after dealing with several injuries. Gagne will presumably return to the closing role for the Brewers who lost Francisco Cordero to free agency and seemed uncomfortable relying on Derrick Turnbow to finish off games despite GM Doug Melvin’s assurances to the contrary. According to Melvin, the team is simply “adding depth.” If you ask me though, $10 million sure seems like a lot to pay for a reliever if you don’t expect them to close for you.
