Posted by pops as St. Louis Cardinals Rumors
One of the fallouts from the Cabrera deal appears to be an increased likely-hood that Scott Rolen will begin the season with the Cardinals according to the Post-Dispatch. Rather than taking a third-baseman off the table it, made Detroit's Brandon Inge available. If the Cards are going to have to eat a significant chunk of Rolen's salary they need value in return and so far the offers haven't been there. The Cardinals may figure they are better off seeing how he comes back from his third shoulder surgery. If he returns to form, that may ease the tension between him and manager Tony Larussa or at least improve his value in a trade later in the season.

1Let’s hope so. I’m not a fan of eating a big chunk of his contract in the first place and someone like Chris Capuano is not what I’m looking for in return. Also, if he comes back and plays poorly again or gets hurt again there’s always the chance he’ll retire (and save us a truckload in the process).

2If Rolen plays well and the Cardinals manage to compete, I suspect the Role-Larussa feud will be a minor issue. If Rolen and/or the Cards stumble badly, I’d suspect either Scott or Tony will be gone. And I know Tony just signed for two more years but management supposedly promised to upgrade the team and so far it’s hard to look at 2008 as anything but a rebuilding year although so far it’s been mostly de-building.
