In 1974 Commissioner Bowie Kuhn suspended George Steinbrenner for two years after the Yankees owner was convicted of making illegal campaign contributions to Richard Nixon.

In more positive Yankee news, Joltin' Joe Dimaggio was named the AL MVP after his 1941 season which included a still record 56-game hitting streak. He edged out Ted Williams who batted .406 that year.

Finally, on this date in 1985 Vince Coleman of the Cardinals was unanimously named NL Rookie of the Year after stealing 110 bases. Unfortunately, what catchers couldn't do, the rain tarp at Busch Stadium did. It caught up with him before game 3 of the NLCS and the resulting injuries prevented him from appearing in the World Series that year.
