The New York Yankees continued their offseason spending spree, signing AJ Burnett to a 5 year deal worth $82.5 million. The Yankees appear to be capitalizing on the down turn in the economy, going on a historic spending spree while the rest of the league has been cutting costs and keeping a sharp eye on their bottom line. Earlier this week the Yanks inked CC Sabathia to a 7 year, $161 million deal, the largest ever contract for a pitcher. The latest signing is pending a physical which is usually a formality, however, with the injury prone Burnett there are no guarantees.

If you thought committing a total of $243.5 million over the next 7 years would take the Yankees out of shopping mode, think again. The New York Post reports that they’ve now joined the bidding for first baseman Mark Teixeira, with Manny Ramirez as a backup option should they lose out on the switch hitting first baseman.

The San Diego Padres are reportedly close to completing a deal that would send shortstop Khalil Greene to the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for two young relief pitchers.

The San Francisco Giants have reportedly inked reliever Bob Howry to a one year deal worth $2.75 million. The 35 year old righty had put up 4 solid years of sub 3.4 ERA relief before last year’s 5.35 effort for the Chicago Cubs. I’m guessing Howry is hoping to re-establish himself and ink a multi-year deal next winter, and the Giants for their part could be getting a very good reliever at a bargain price if Howry can regain is previous form.

Numerous reports out of Baltimore are claiming that the Orioles might be the 3rd team that helps Padres GM Kevin Towers complete his trade of ace Jake Peavy to the Chicago Cubs.

Towers has been seeking to trade his soon to be free agent ace and the Cubs were reportedly the leading candidate. Unfortunately for the Padres, the Cubs don’t have the major league ready talent that they are seeking in return for the 2007 Cy Young award winner.

That, though is where Baltimore enters the picture.

Cubs Seeking Royals’ Teahen?

The Chicago Tribune is reporting that the Chicago Cubs are in deep discussions to acquire Mark Teahen from the Kansas City Royals in exchange for pitcher Sean Marshall and infielder Mike Fontenot.
The Cubs have been looking for a left handed bat in the outfield but to be honest, I’m not quite sure why they think [...]

Red Sox Send Royals Coco Crisp

The Boston Red Sox have traded the best name in baseball (Coco Crisp) to the Kansas City Royals for flame throwing reliever Ramon Ramirez.

Ramirez has a blazing fastball and will likely become the setup man for All-Star Red Sox closer Jonathan Pablebon. Ramirez pitched 71 2/3rds innings last year and compiled an ERA of 2.64 along with 70 Ks.

The St. Louis Cardinals are reportedly working on a deal to send All-Star outfielder Ryan Ludwick to the Colorado Rockies in exchange for slugger Matt Holliday.
Ludwick enjoyed a break out year last year batting .299 with 37 home runs and 113 RBI while Holliday hit .321 with 25 long balls, and 88 runs driven in. [...]

Update 5: Well, if Sports Illustrated’s Jon Heyman is to be believed, the title of this post may be accurate once again! Apparently the deal has Manny Ramirez (I hold him personally responsible for this whole mess) going to the Dodgers, Jason Bay heading to the Boston Red Sox, and the Pirates getting 4 prospects [...]

Rumor: Dodgers Dealing for Bay?

Well, if we were to believe all the different sources that have said a trade for Jason Bay is a done deal, he’d have been traded about 23 times by now.
However, this being a rumor site, it would be remiss of us to not tell you that MLB.com is reporting that the Los Angeles Dodgers [...]

It seems only appropriate that a trade involving Manny Ramirez would be pretty complicated. Sources around the league are murmoring about a possible 3 team blockbuster that would send Manny Ramirez to the Florida Marlins, Jeremy Hermida to the Pitsburgh Pirates, and Jason Bay to Boston filling the void left by Manny.
Three team deals are [...]
