Minor Free Agent Signings

Here’s a quick rundown of some of the free agent signings that you might have missed in the midst of all the Sabathia, Yankees, Mets madness lately.

The Cincinnati Reds signed reliever Arthur Rhodes to a 2 year deal worth $4 million. The veteran lefty put up impressive numbers last year, pitching in 61 games with the Mariners and Marlins and going 4-1 with a 2.06 ERA.

The Minnesota Twins re-signed infielder Nick Punto to a 2 year deal worth $8.5 million. The infielder batted .284 with 2 long balls and 28 RBI in 99 games for the Twins last year and will likely be the team’s starting shortstop going forward.

The Minneapolis Star Tribune reported today that Johan Santana’s agent has stated that it will take a 7 year deal with an annual value of $20 million to land the star pitcher. The Twins had offered 4 years at $20 million but the 7 year demand simply won’t be something the team can accommodate. Obviously [...]

MLB Trade Rumors has a “trusted New York sportswriter” talking about at giant three way deal between the Mets, Twins and A’s:

With the Tigers having nabbed Cabrera the focus moves to Johan Santana and the Boston Herald is reporting that the Sox and Twins negotiated deep into the night last night. Boston seems intent on not including top prospect Clay Bucholz in the deal but is still willing to put together a blockbuster package that could include either [...]

The focus on Johan Santana appears to be switching coasts. With the Yankees claiming to be out of the bidding and the Red Sox apparently not willing to offer what the Twins want, MLB.com is reporting that the Angels are willing to jump into the fray. If true that would mean that the Halos [...]

The New York Times reported that the potential deal to send Johan Santana to the Yankees “showed a flicker of life” this morning when the Twins “backed off their demand that the right-hander Ian Kennedy be added to the Yankees’ trade offer.” The Yanks’ offer to this point has been Phillip Hughs, Melky Cabrera, and [...]
