News: A-Rod Talking to Yanks Minus Boras

I imagine it was with some glee that MLB.com reported that A-Rod has crawled back to the negotiating table to meet with the Yankees minus super-agent Scott Boras. The Yankees have refused to talk if Boras is even in the room. Apparently A-Rod wants to play in a World Series at least once in his career and that’s now more important than money (or at least more important than some of the money).
The big winners here are the Rangers who are no longer obligated to pick up $21 million of A-Rod’s salary over the next three years and baseball if players begin to realize that Scott Boras’ focus on the bottom line may not always be good for them or the game.
Of course it could just be a ploy to try to drive up Rodriguez’ price in the free agent market. A price that is apparently lower than Alex anticipated without the Yankees deep pockets driving up the bidding.

1I hope it works out. I hate the Yankees and I hate A-Rod but I hate them so much more together. I hope they sign him for 10 years and that both the Yankees and A-Rod regret the contract by the 2nd year. The notion of a distracted and miserable and aging Yankee clubhouse makes me giddy with joy. And I’m not even a Red Sox fan.

2I think the real winners are the baseball fans. A-Rod’s the posterboy for the money side of professional baseball. He also happens to be one of the best players in the game today.
The fact that A-Rod is listening to the ‘love-of-the-game’ voice could mean a return to players placing more importance on winning than on making money.
